I feel that we should not rely on imported food as much as we are, since it is not so fresh by the time it reaches the UK and with the air miles/road miles it is not the GREEN thing to do anyway. We should be much more self sufficient than we are and support our UK farmers, not by cheap imported food which is stale, and puts our farmers out of business.

Air pollution comes from both natural and man made sources. Though globally man made pollutants from combustion, construction, mining, agriculture and warfare are increasingly significant in the air pollution equation.

I agree it's key to increase "homegrown" food. The more self reliant we can become, the lower we will pay for food as importing will be less of a necessity! Great blog, keep up the good work!!

Of course we should increase homegrown food production!

Climate change and the increased occurrence of extreme weather events are beginning to threaten our food supplies more and more. Together with the delicately balanced re-stocking of supermarkets, the margin for error is large. The ease of use of supermarkets lulls customers into a false sense of security, there is little alternative capacity to provide food if supermarkets fail.

Supply chains should shrink and begin to relate directly to local markets again. Supermarkets have too much control over food supply and too often food is grown locally, sent to a central depot and then distributed back to its origin.
