Thank you for your comments Oliver and Geoffrey. Oliver, I agree that this is a sensitive issue but we do need to start a conversation not only about the choices we make, but about the choices we have, which are not always those that are health-promoting. it certainly won't be easy, which is why we need multiple perspectives to be engaged.

A good informative writeup on food security. I look forward for direct interaction with Dr Sara Kirk on food security issues.
Iam a Phd student in Disaster Management at Masinde muliro University in Kenya researching in food security.

This is a really sensitive subject. Many of the changes involve questioning peoples "rights" in terms of consumption. Meat? Sweets and confectionery? Ready meals versus creating one's own? See what I mean?! Take a look at the shopping trolleys leaving a supermarket anywhere near you – the evidence is on display.

Furthermore, changes are definitely required sooner than they will happen through gentle persuasion. The NHS, and indeed many people cannot afford (from a health perspective) to wait for policy-makers to react. Equally, there are some stark implications for farmers if the necessary dietary changes are to occur.

Thank you for your comment Shirley. You are right that food security and sustainability are complex issues. Consequently, the solutions also need to address this complexity. This means that society as a whole needs to be engaged in the conversation to address these complex issues - that includes farmers, supermarkets and consumers.

An interesting article. Why do you not link up with NFU and other farming organisations concerned with food production and, of course, supermarkets that should be selling British produced food at prices that give farmers a living income and that people can afford to buy?
Townswomen's Guilds (of which I am a member) is now campaigning for food security and food sustainability, which are complex issues.
